This research studies a particular copy of the Praeclara Ferdinandi Cortesii de Nova Maris and the Plan of Tenochtitlan and Map of the Gulf of Mexico preserved in the Austrian National Library. We argue that this copy of the illuminated Plan presents unique characteristics that distinguish it from other known copies. This paper argues that this Viennese version of the Praeclara is a “final proof copy” and that the accompanying Plan is a presentation copy of the woodcut. In addition, the influence of the court of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria on the production of this edition is explored, suggesting that the collection of indigenous artifacts from the Central Valley of Mexico that traveled to Nuremberg contributed to the creation of this book.
